Which translation is choice?

In my preaching and leading at ABIDE (our young adult ministry) I use the ESV translation of the Bible. Primarily because I feel it is clear and most accurately maintains the original text. Paired with the publisher's commitment to the authority of scripture as God's word, it is the right translation for our young adults trying to stay afloat in a culture rife with moralism and in need of gospel life jackets. Crossway is also active in the growing number of resources and study Bibles in the ESV translation - one I am excited for is the Gospel Transformation Bible.

Mars Hill, a church in Seattle and other places, uses the ESV as its primary text and their pastor has a good list of reasons why. You can read them here. In essence they use the ESV because:

1. THE ESV UPHOLDS THE TRUTH THAT SCRIPTURE IS THE ACTUAL WORDS OF GOD, NOT JUST THE THOUGHTS OF GOD

2. THE ESV UPHOLDS THAT WHAT IS SAID MUST BE KNOWN BEFORE WHAT IS MEANT CAN BE DETERMINED

3. THE ESV UPHOLDS THE TRUTH THAT WORDS CARRY MEANING

4. THE ESV UPHOLDS THE THEOLOGICAL NOMENCLATURE OF SCRIPTURE

5. THE ESV UPHOLDS THE TRUTH THAT WHILE SCRIPTURE IS MEANT FOR ALL PEOPLE, IT CANNOT BE COMMUNICATED IN SUCH A WAY THAT ALL PEOPLE RECEIVE IT

6. THE ESV UPHOLDS THE COMPLEMENTARIAN NATURE OF GENDER IN SCRIPTURE

Artisan Disruption

This week while in Phoenix for a couple of stirring days thinking about equipping the church and living into our missional calling together I experienced artisan disruption.  The lads and I were heading to the second day of the gathering and decided to find some local coffee spot to fuel our morning. When the first stop was closed we rounded the corner into another shop that pushed against our attempts at constant efficiency.  Inside a small art gallery (which also had a hair salon) there was a coffee bar, with one barista doing more than just making drinks, he was making art. We don't need better slogans we need to better understand grace

Admit it, you, like me have wasted entirely too much time thinking of new acronyms and poster ideas that will launch us into holiness. And all that we have achieved is lame preaching on being "better" and trying harder and the realization that we fail time and time again. We don't get grace. Art Azurdia on Spirit-Empowered Preaching

This week the Philadelphia Partnership hosted Dr. Art Azurdia. The partnership's goal is to encourage and edify pastors in Eastern Washington, three times a year through preaching from respected influencers. Art was asked to preach on what it means to be Spirit-empowered preachers. In his two sessions he challenged assumptions and gave pastors a thorough study of scripture on being filled with the Spirit and emboldened to preach.
